Did you know that this magnificent Musée des Beaux-Arts is Marseille's oldest museum? Inaugurated in 1869, it is one of the 15 museums in France created by the Consulate in 1801. Works of art were seized from churches and émigrés during the early years of the Revolution. The collections were gradually enriched, especially in the 19th century, with works by Perugino, Guerchino, Carracci and Pannini in Italy, and by Champaigne, Vouet, Lesueur, Greuze, Vernet, Hubert Robert and David in France.
