Formerly called Monts de Piété, municipal credits developed in France from the th century to find a new impulse at the beginning of the xxth century. The emblem of Marseille is a griffin, a mythological animal chosen by reference to the symbol of the first Mont de Piety, opened in La Pérouse in Italy in 1462.
