CANTINI MUSEUM
Musée Cantini in the heart of the city, a stone's throw from the prefecture, with one of the finest collections of modern art
The Cantini Museum is housed in an elegant 17th century mansion in the heart of the city, a stone's throw from the Prefecture, in the1st arrondissement. One of the most beautiful collections of modern art can be admired in this museum, which is a perfect complement to the museum of contemporary art located in the south of the city, in the Bonneveine district. Works of various major pictorial currents of the 20th century are presented here. You can admire fauvism, cubist or pointillist works. Works of masters (Artaud, Picasso, Dubuffet, Léger, Giacometti, Bacon, Balthus...) as well as collections of photographs and drawings. The section devoted to photography is not lacking in interest: it offers some very beautiful photographs covering the entire 20th century. Lovers of Marseille will be able to admire some beautiful historical photos, some of which represent the famous Transbordeur Bridge, which was once on the Old Port and disappeared during the Second World War. The famous marble maker, Jules Cantini, acquired this downtown residence in 1888 and donated it to the city in 1916 to become, according to his wishes as a patron, a museum dedicated to contemporary art. A visit to this museum during your visit to Marseille will allow you to see with your own eyes one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary art in the country. The program of temporary exhibitions is of course available on the museum's website, as well as on the city's social networks.
