MONUMENT AUX HÉROS DE L'ARMÉE D'ORIENT
This famous monument on Marseille's Corniche pays tribute to the soldiers who fell in the First World War.
The Monument aux Heros de l'Armée d'Orient et des Terres Lointaines pays tribute to the soldiers who fell in the First World War, on the Eastern and African fronts, in the Dardanelles, Salonika and Syria. Inaugurated in 1927 in the presence of President Doumergue, it is the work, among others, of Gaston Castel, a broken-hearted Marseilles architect. This "open-air" portico overlooking the sea is a reminder that Marseille is a gateway to the Orient. The two winged female figures symbolize heroism. The central statue with raised arms is an allegory of victory.
