THE CREEK
This industrial building on Marseille's Old Port once housed La Criée, and is now a national theater.
The Théâtre National de Marseille, known as La Criée, opened in 1981, and is housed in a historic building of prime importance on the Old Port. Until 1976, this was the site of the fish auction. In a hall with a resolutely modern Parisian feel, wholesalers sell their wares to the fishmongers who come to stock up. Built in 1855 to compensate for the narrowness of the previous fish market, nestled in the old quarters, this building still retains its characteristic facade. Its conversion into a theater is a real success. Don't pass by without taking a look at this industrial and commercial building, so dear to the life of Marseilles in days gone by.
