THE TIDE
A masterpiece of technology and engineering dating from the century, the reference point for measurements, as Level 0.
As you stroll along the Corniche, just after passing the Anse de la Fausse-monnaie and before venturing into the greenery of the Parc Valmer, you'll notice a curious building on your right, with an explanatory sign next to it. You're looking at the tide gauge, a masterpiece of technology and engineering, dating back to the 19th century and providing the most accurate maritime measurements ever since. This is the reference 0 level in France, where the altitude of Mont Blanc was measured and where sea levels are monitored (which have risen by 16 cm in just over a century). It's an unusual structure, unknown to most Marseillais.
