CAROLINIAN HOSPITAL
Caroline Hospital is located on one of the islands of the Frioul Archipelago, the island of Ratonneau to be precise. This complex was built to cope with the epidemic of yellow plague that hit Mediterranean ports at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Marseille, traumatized by the memory of the great plague of 1720 and its tens of thousands of victims, took all its precautions to avoid the worst and created a new quarantine zone in Frioul. The hospital was inaugurated in 1828 as a health post directly linked to this project. The municipal and departmental architect Penchaud is responsible for the project which will be named in honor of the Duchess of Berry, Caroline de Bourbon Siciles. The ensemble consists mainly of 12 buildings with very distinct functions. Sick and convalescent are supported separately. In the center is the chapel built like a Greek temple, not without recalling the history of the city. The functional premium, however, is on the whole, also limited in terms of budget. However, the Caroline Hospital, also known as the Wind Hospital, is worth a visit, remains of great historical interest since it synthesizes 1,000 years of architecture and offers a beautiful panorama at 360 degrees on the Marseille rade. Destroyed during the Second World War and then abandoned until 1978, when the islands were acquired by the city, the renovated parts visited and now host concerts and exhibitions.
