MUSEUM OF DECORATIVE ARTS AND FASHION
Museum of decorative arts, earthenware and fashion installed in the heart of the superb Château Borély, to discover in Marseille.
In the heart of the Château Borély, you'll find the museum that once symbolized Marseille's aristocracy. In 1856, Gaston de Panisse, heir to the château, sold it to the city of Marseille. In 1864, the château was refurbished and opened to the public. Today, the château houses the new Musée des Arts décoratifs, de la Faïence et de la Mode. Built between 1760 and 1770, the bastide Borély is distinguished by the elegant austerity of its facades and the quality of its interior decor. The château now houses a selection of 2,500 works: furniture, ceramics, glass, tapestries, objets d'art, rare exotic objects, design and fashion collections, from the 18th century to the present day. These collections, drawn from the Borély, Cantini, Musee de la Faïence and Musee de la Mode collections, are housed in nearly 1,600m2 of exhibition space. Listed as a historic monument, the bastide is structured around different "period" spaces (the "room" period) and others that have been restored. Discover the gilded drawing room, the state room, the grand gallery with its collection of 18th-century ceramics, the leather room, the dining room and the bathroom. Upstairs, the cabinet of curiosities, an Art Nouveau collection from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, the grand salon, as well as the state bedroom and the baroque chapel.
