FLAVIAN BRIDGE
Well-preserved Roman bridge at Saint-Chamas, listed as a historic monument and one of the finest ancient buildings in the region.
The Flavian Bridge is one of the region's most beautiful ancient buildings. Few Roman bridges are so well preserved. Built by the Romans during the reign of Augustus, it was located on the road linking Marseille to Arles. It retains all its former grandeur, and the traces of the many carriages that passed over it. Its single arch in yellow limestone is wedged between two triumphal arches with pilasters surmounted by eagles and superb lions in white Calissane stone. Classified as a historic monument in 1840, it remained in use until the mid-20th century.
