Our stay commenced with a cold greeting from the owner, Guillaume, who didn’t offer to take our bags or offer us anything to drink in the 44 degree heat of the day. I looked past this minor flaw, and decided to focus on the beauty and peacefulness of the immense property.
We had booked the most expensive suite, and upon beginning to unpack my things shortly after arriving I ascended to the loft where the bed was - it felt hotter up there than it did outside. As there was no window to open upstairs, I was given a barely functioning fan to deal with the problem.
My husband has epilepsy and I was worried that such heat could affect him; I informed the owners of this, and initially was responded with « there’s really nothing we can do ». My husband and I considered cancelling the reservation entirely and finding a new place to stay for the next 3 days, which I really wish we had done. After a few hours of Guillaume and his wife Emilie were nowhere to be found, I sent an e-mail to which Guillaume responded and he and my husband discussed in person. Suddenly, the option of his daughter vacating the Junior Suite for us was an option. It was almost 9pm and I wondered who would clean the room at this hour, but little did I know at that point that cleanliness is not a priority for these people (this soon became even more obvious seeing dog waste all over the lawn throughout our stay, as well as a rat/pest removal service truck on the property).
We ended up staying at Crillon Le Brave that night and returning the next day. Because the restaurants we wanted to go to were closed for Covid or booked, we decided to eat at the property. Another guest who was clearly very sick (heavily coughing without covering her mouth, and simply sounded/looked very ill) was also having dinner the 2 nights that we were. The real nightmare began with this guest, whom apparently Emilie was aware had Covid before her stay at Mas des Precheurs. There were zero efforts made to try to encourage airflow in the building - every time I turned around, the kitchen doors were always being closed behind me. This woman was extremely aggressive, annoying, nosy and bothersome - she was practically breathing down my husband’s neck as he was trying to take our plates that were left on the kitchen counter (with no explanation by the « chefs », who leave before the dinner even begins). We were expected to wash our own dishes which we had no problem doing initially but what turned out to be both disgusting and unhygienic - especially dealing with this sick woman over our shoulders. We did everything we could to avoid her, and we felt the owners were doing the same - they were constantly nowhere to be found, so this woman would constantly bother and harass us with questions she had, etc. Needless to say, after 2.5 years of avoiding Covid (even being in the same house as my parents who were infected at one point), we both caught it after our stay at Mas des Precheurs. When I emailed the owners about it, the condescending, rude, defensive nature of Emilie’s reply was appalling. I had never been treated so unbelievably poorly after spending over a thousand euros for a 2 night stay (we were also charged for the first night ultimately even though that was not what was initially agreed upon). Clearly her response deflected from guilt - the unprofessional and immature attitude was simply shocking though, especially coming from someone who calls themselves a « therapist ». I highly encourage anyone who is considering staying at this place to look elsewhere - you won’t regret it.
