The largest stone bridge in the world, designed by the engineer Franz Mayor de Montricher
This aqueduct with its three rows of arches (from bottom to top: 12, 15 and 23 arches) will impress even the least enthusiasts! The giant Roquefavour bridge is among the largest in the world with a length of nearly 400 m and a height of 83 m. It is probably the largest stone bridge in the world. Franz Mayor de Montricher, a road and bridge engineer, sketched it in the 19th century. The monumental work of its construction lasted six years and mobilized 5,000 workers. The work was delivered in 1847 and therefore allowed for the channelling of water from Durance to Marseille crossing the Arc river. Today, the aqueduct is still in use and the bridge links the two sides of the Arc valley. Remarkably well-preserved and maintained, it was classified as a historic monument in 2002. A nice stroll from the plateau of Ventabren, on foot or by bike, allows you to discover the work. It offers a beautiful panorama, with the Sainte-Victoire mountain as backdrop.
