MUSÉE SPIRITAIN DES ARTS AFRICAINS
Museum dedicated to African arts, testimony of the life and traditions in equatorial Africa, in the Maison Saint-Joseph in Allex.
This museum dedicated to African arts is located in the Maison Saint-Joseph, itself located in the heart of a large estate overlooking the center of Allex and the Drôme valley. A site of peace and beauty occupied by the Saint-Joseph Spiritan community. You will discover an 18th century Italian style castle, with two new wings added in the 1930's in an architecture inspired by the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Congregation of the Holy Spirit, a Catholic missionary society founded in France in 1703, has taken on the mission of spreading the Gospel message throughout the world. The Spiritan missionaries work with the most destitute populations by bringing them the Good Word as well as material support. Established in Africa at the beginning of the 19th century, this religious congregation was particularly active in the evangelization of the black continent. In return, the missionaries gathered collections that constitute a precious testimony of the life, traditions, art and beliefs of the populations of equatorial Africa at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Presented in a modern museography, the vast majority of the works come from Gabon, Congo Brazzaville and Congo Kinshasa. The Maison Saint-Joseph des Spiritains also offers accommodation for individuals and groups.
