PRIEURÉ DE CHARRIÈRE
A priory in an exceptional setting, with a beautiful 15th-century chapel and convent buildings.
The Prieuré de Charrière was almost completely ruined when volunteers took on the monumental task of saving and enhancing it. Recently, the Patrimoine Castelneuvois en Galaure association has carried out a remarkable restoration project on this long-undergrowth site from 2018 to 2023. The association was awarded a Palme d'Argent at the Gestes d'Or awards for its innovative digital and 3D restoration work. The aim was to make the lost paintings of the 17th-century choir visible to a wider public. Supported by the municipality of Châteauneuf-de-Galaure and the Region, this association continues its commitment and expertise to share this heritage with all generations. For the record, the Charrière priory, which dominates the Galaure river in the Drôme des Collines region, was originally a 12th-century fortified church within a small monastery of Cluniac Benedictines. From 1456 to the French Revolution, the site was occupied by a Franciscan monastery. Today, the site boasts a beautifully decorated 15th-century chapel, as well as conventual buildings rebuilt in 1567 after a fire caused by the Wars of Religion. They too have preserved some superb decorative features. The Charrière priory, with its exceptional setting, is now a venue for shows and exhibitions, and above all hosts fascinating tours in French, English, German and Dutch.
