MUSEUM OF DIE AND DIOIS
The municipal museum of Die and the Diois, which holds one of the most important archaeological heritages of the Rhône-Alpes region.
The history of the Diois region is as vast as its territory. Each month brings its share of new discoveries: unpublished inscriptions and fruitful archaeological surveys enrich it constantly. The Museum of Die and Diois invites you to discover this heritage through the treasures collected and preserved over the years. A museum of local archaeology and history, it was created at a time when, in the wake of the French Revolution, museums were seen as markers of local identity and places of popular education. Housed in a beautiful mansion, located on the edge of the historic centre of the small Gallo-Roman town, this fascinating municipal museum contains one of the most important archaeological heritages in the Rhône-Alpes region. It must be said that its origin goes back to 1905! At that time, it was a question of presenting an Egyptian collection that had been offered to the town... Then there was a treasure trove of coins, Canaan weapons... and finally the objects gradually unearthed by local excavations. So the museum, spread over seven rooms on two floors, is mainly dedicated today to the history of the Diois and the Voconces. Among the local archaeological sites, the nearby Charens site continues to yield its treasures. Possibility of guided tours. Beautiful interior courtyard. Activities according to the local cultural agenda, especially during the Roman Festival. A project is under study to move this historical museum to the former episcopal palace of Die.
