DAUPHINÉ PROTESTANT MUSEUM
Museum presenting the great periods of the history of Protestantism in Dauphiné, a patrimonial jewel about the Huguenots.
In this old village, classified among the most beautiful in France, you will find a particularly interesting museum, a heritage jewel on the steps of the Huguenots. Poët-Laval was a commandery of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem who changed to the Reformation in the 16th century. The museum, created in 1961, is installed in a house of the XIVth century, which became a temple in the XVIIth century. It presents the main periods in the history of Protestantism in the Dauphiné, without forgetting the origin when Waldensian peddlers spread the evangelical message in the region from the 12th century... You will discover old Bibles, objects of worship which were used in the "deserts" - places of clandestine worship - as well as numerous historical documents which shed light on a part of history. It must be said that this museum continues to enrich its collections and remains very much alive, particularly through the rich library that it makes available to students and historians. The wooden galleries of the old temple are listed as historical monuments. A shop also sells Bibles, historical works and postcards. The museum is the starting point of the pilgrimage On the footsteps of the Huguenots, one of the European circuits on this theme. In the Drôme it follows the GR® 965 with 29 stages for a total of 374 km. The first stage from Poët-Laval/Dieulefit represents 5.8 km (1h30 walk).
