THE JACQUEMART TOWER

Square tower transformed into a belfry in the century, bearing the name of Jacquemart in Romans-sur-Isère.
Of the medieval ramparts of the town, only the Jacquemart tower remains. This square tower, transformed into a belfry in the 15th century, bears the name Jacquemart, a diminutive of Jacques-Marteau and the medieval nickname of the village bell ringers. The clock of this belfry was installed in 1425. In 1789, the man was disguised as a national guard, then as a Polish lancer, and under the Restoration, as a troubadour. From 1830, it is a volunteer who is responsible for ringing the bells. Today he is a puppet who watches over the town of which he has become the emblem.
