SAOÛ FOREST
Remarkable site and sensitive natural space, a paradise for naturalists and lovers of the wild environment in Saou.
A remarkable natural site and the jewel in the crown of the Drôme department's sensitive natural areas. It occupies a strange basin at the top of the mountain, a crater 12 km long and 2 km wide, wooded and haloed by cliffs, including the Trois-Becs, culminating at 1,589 m, a standard that can be spotted from afar. The Saoû massif is one of the most beautiful perched synclines in France. Here, you'll find mountain, Mediterranean and wetland flora, as well as all six of France's juniper species. Animal biodiversity, too, with the presence of the chamois, emblem of an opulent fauna that sees northern species rubbing shoulders with those of southern environments: wild boar, of course, but also martens, roe deer, weasels, foxes, badgers and marmots. And in flight, we observe nesting birds, golden eagles, ravens, passerines and buzzards. The remarkable natural site of Saoû is owned, managed and protected by the Drôme department. The massif is a paradise for naturalists, hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders, who can take advantage of the forest's network of trails and signposted itineraries (topographical guides, mountain bike fact sheets, discovery games). In addition, climbing routes attract climbers. At the edge of the forest, parking, picnic areas and Auberge des Dauphins, site house with restaurant and café. Fires are forbidden in summer, on pain of a fine. The forest ranger doesn't joke about it, and rightly so.
