SUZE-LA-ROUSSE CASTLE
Renaissance castle, home to a museum on the history of the Drôme and the vine, the University of Wine, a venue for cultural events.
The Drôme has three castles open to the public, one of which is Suze-la-Rousse, which was commissioned by the princes of Orange in the 12th century. It is an elegant and light fortress with its large windows and numerous openings to the outside. As in the castle of Grignan, the Renaissance has left important traces: stuccos and gypseries, grand staircase, arms rooms, octagonal lounge... The castle houses a museum on the history of the Drôme and the vine, but also the University of Wine. Built on a rocky promontory, this medieval fortress was originally a spectacular military structure protected by towers and a rampart. The building was transformed in the 16th and 18th centuries into an elegant and grand residence. One can appreciate from room to room the richness of the interior paintings, the stuccos and the gypseries of the salons. On the outskirts of the castle lies the garenne, a vast wooded area where the walls of a 16th century game of paume, a dovecote and a chapel still stand.
Acquired by the Department of the Drôme in 1965, the castle of Suze-la-Rousse has been the object of a vast cultural project articulated around the history of the site and the wine heritage in the Drôme with a modern museographic tour. The castle regularly hosts cultural events. As for the University of Wine, which has been housed there since 1978, it is a school of international renown that offers a range of training courses in the vine and wine industry.
