ARMENIAN HERITAGE CENTER
Valence Armenian Heritage Center, presenting permanent and temporary exhibitions featuring nearly 2,000 documents.
This original center, created in 2005, reopened its doors in September 2018 after several months of expansion work. A necessary renovation for this establishment, which is an important part of Valence's cultural life. It's neither a static museum nor a memorial, but a place for exhibitions and events dedicated to the general public in the service of a living history and current events. After the tragedy of the 1915 genocide, a large number of survivors arrived in the south of France, settling in Valence, where today they form a well-integrated community. This Armenian heritage center, the only one of its kind in Europe, features a permanent exhibition on the history of the Armenians, developed around a number of themes, through almost 2,000 documents: photos, texts, audio testimonies, films... Transmitting a collective memory, this center also makes us reflect on the genocide, exile, identity, openness and integration.
The first permanent exhibition tells the story of the Armenians who settled in the Drôme in the 1920s. A sensitive, immersive setting allows visitors to discover the genocide and exile, as well as the arrival and integration of the newcomers. Temporary exhibitions and a rich cultural season (lectures, concerts, children's and family events, debates, film screenings, etc.) are held throughout the year. Informative and well organized, it's a must-see in Valence.
