Le Mole, an iconic mountain dominating part of the Arve valley, cited by Mary Shelley in her novel.
An iconic mountain which dominates with its particular shape a part of the Arve valley, above Bonneville up to Marignier in Faucigny Glières. A "small" mountain by its size, its summit is only 1,863 meters high, but it offers a fantastic 360° view on a good part of the Haute-Savoie, the Geneva and the Jura. Moreover, Mary Shelley quotes the Môle in her novel Frankenstein, "mountainous summit east of the lake" lit by a disturbing storm... An "original" mountain in the region since it has the shape of an almost perfect cone, giving it the appearance of an extinct volcano. After a rather steep ascent by the Marignier ridge, the hikers will enjoy an exceptional panorama, in particular towards the Mont-Blanc massif. Another less steep path starts from Saint-Jean-de-Tholome, and takes you in less than 2 hours of walking (for the regulars) to the summit. It is a great family classic in the region. For the record, it was from the summit of the Môle that the Englishman Schuckburgh estimated the altitude of the highest peak in the Alps at 4,804 meters. On the way back down, you should discover the Ayze vineyard which flourishes on the first slopes of the Môle.
Also to be discovered, a small chapel in the place called Sous Etraz is dedicated to Our Lady of La Salette. Dominated by the Môle, built on the ancient Roman road, the origin of this very old chapel is not well known. It is here that in 1606 Saint François de Sales visited the wine growers of Ayze.
