THE WHITE MOUNTAIN
An impressive peak, the highest point in the Alps and the highest in Western Europe, ideal for hiking.
Majestic summit of the "Roof of Europe", the Mont Blanc is the emblem of Chamonix! The highest point of the Alps, between France and Italy, it is the highest summit in Western Europe. Its summit of eternal snow is visible from many sites in the department on a clear day. Chamonix, Les Houches and Saint-Gervais share its territory and remain privileged viewpoints all year long. The town of Chamonix, renamed Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in 1923 at the dawn of the first Winter Olympics (1924), is associated with this mythical summit. If you are ready to devote a week of walking to it, you can embark on a course with an ascent or on a long hike of 220 km around the massif in the version of Italy, Switzerland and France. The ascent of Mont Blanc requires a good preparation, whatever the itinerary considered. Some slopes are around 40°. In addition to a good physical preparation, the rules of roping, unscrewing and self-rescue in crevasses are techniques that must be mastered by those who embark on the adventure. Every year at the end of summer, the most athletic participate in the mythical Mont Blanc ultratrail, which totals 170 km of race and 10,000 m of positive altitude difference. This extraordinary challenge crosses three countries: France, Italy and Switzerland. Finally, to get a close look at it without climbing it, you can go to the Aiguille du Midi by the cable car of the same name, which takes you to the summits without too much effort... Splendid and impressive !
