LAC DE LESSY
One of the most beautiful natural sites of Faucigny-Glières offering an ideal view of the mountain lake and the observation of ibexes.
Without doubt one of the most beautiful natural sites in the Faucigny Glières region. You'll have to walk with some difficulty - the duration will vary according to your itinerary, but allow at least 2 hours one way via Cenise or Paradis from the village of Petit-Bornand (the lake is also on the GR®96itinerary) - to reach this alpine lake nestling at an altitude of 1,733 metres. Nestling in a combe at the foot of a rocky ridge that stretches between the Pic de Jallouvre, the Buclon and the Aiguille Verte, it is one of the Natura 2000 sites designed to protect remarkable environments. Home to a small colony of alpine newts and a fine plant community of endangered alpine pondweed, Lac de Lessy has also been restocked with brook salmon (fishing authorized with only 1 catch per angler). Surrounded by mountain pastures, Lac de Lessy offers the ideal view of a mountain lake. You can sleep and eat (delicious blueberry tarts) at the Refuge de Lessy. From the lake, other hikes are possible (Pic de Jallouvre, Aiguille Verte). If you're lucky, you may spot ibex and chamois in the vicinity.
A lake saved and rewarded
Due to faults in the moraine lining the bottom, Lac de Lessy could well have been completely drained had man not intervened in the best possible way to preserve this exceptional environment. The work carried out on this magnificent mountain lake has been awarded the Marianne d'Or de l'environnement.
