THE LIME KILNS OF CONS-SAINTE-COLOMBE
Near Faverges, at the end of the village, on the edge of the plain that links Annecy to Ugine, the battery of ovens was rehabilitated in 2006. Lime kilns that testify to the activity of Cons-Sainte-Colombe, which became Val de Chaise in January 2016. Thanks to its limestone quarry, the municipality developed the quicklime industry until the end of the 20th century. The boilermakers produced the white stone used to build many buildings in the region, such as the village church, the prefecture of Haute-Savoie, but also the abbey of Tamié or the castle of Giez. To visit, the ovens (visible from the ground floor and topped by a glass part allowing you to admire their interior from the first floor, in the modest museum space that has been set up there) freely, during the summer months. A guided tour (one Wednesday per month, in July and August at 5:30 pm) is possible with a country guide of the Friends of Viuz-Faverges during the "Soul of the Villages" tour and during heritage days, including traditional housing and an agricultural farm producing tomme and reblochon.
