7 FOOT SLATE QUARRY
Visit a remarkable slate quarry in Morzine, one of France's last remaining slate quarries.
Slate, traditionally used for roofing in certain regions including Savoie, is thought to have been discovered in the 10th century. L'Ardoisière des 7 Pieds is one of the last slate quarries in France. The factory owes its survival to Franck Buet, a slate quarryman himself, who guides visitors through his workshop. Here, he explains the history and production techniques - extraction, slate mining and cutting - of schist slate (or lauze). A visit rich in anecdotes and explanations.
