FORT BARRAUX
One of the oldest defensive forts in the Alps, it has a deterrent function and is used as an arms and ammunition store.
Fort Barraux is a bastioned fortification dating from the 16th century and was rebuilt several times, notably by Vauban, a famous engineer of Louis XIV, in the 18th century. It is one of the oldest defensive squares in the Alps. Although the fort initially served as a deterrent, it also served as a warehouse for weapons and ammunition, before being a prison for German officers in the First World War, for civilians in the Second World War, and for traffickers and political prisoners.
