DISTILLERIE DE PIED MENU
Located near the Rhone Valley, the orchards of Domaine de Pied-Menu produce Williams pears. The traditional distillery has been developing since 1964 the spirits from this fruit and specialising in the production of "poires prisionnnières" (prisoner pears). This technique, while not being widespread, is original. When pears are in the early stages and still small enough at the beginning of spring, they are put into a carafe which is hung to a nearby branch. After about 3 months, when these pears mature as prisoners of their carafes, they are harvested with their container. Each carafe containing a pear is first carefully cleaned then filled with Williams pear spirit. It is then ready to be marketed. The Distillerie du Pied Menu offers visits of orchards bearing their carafes in season and of the distillery, all year round, by appointment only, for individuals and groups. It also offers the possibility to view videos describing the process. The visit which lasts for about an hour and the tasting which follows are free.
