GANTERIE LESDIGUIÈRES BARNIER

History: Fontaine is in the suburbs of Grenoble. The manufacture of gloves in the Grenoble region dates back to the 14th century. In the 19th century, the city was known worldwide for its kidskin gloves. The Lesdiguères-Barnier glove factory was created a few years ago, from the merger of the Grenoble Lesdiguières factory, created in 1903, and the Barnier glove factory created in 1885 in Fontaine. The director, Jean Strazzeri, has created the association of the Friends of the Living Glove Museum, whose objective is to create a glove museum in Grenoble. Special features: All manufacturing is carried out in the Isère workshops: skin work, cutting, slitting, sewing, topstitching and embroidery. The company sells almost half of its production abroad. In France, Lesdiguères-Barnier products are sold by Le Bon Marché, Helion, Gants Muriel, Paris and at the Lesdiguières-Barnier direct sales boutique in Grenoble (10, rue Voltaire).

Plus: Guided tours of the glove-making workshop are available for groups. You will learn everything about glove making, from the preparation of skins to cutting and sewing, and even local history, when women from mountain villages sewed gloves for the gloves of Grenoble, in the evening by candlelight, in order to have a small income when the land was not enough to feed the families...
