ATELIER BERTHIER-BESSAC
For 150 years, the Berthier-Bessac workshop has been creating stained glass windows and renovating historical ones. Its ancestral know-how has been recognised by the label Entreprise du patrimoine vivant.
History. The workshop was founded in 1860 in Pont d'Ain (Ain). The founders were Father Pron and Antoine Bessac. He had learned his trade at the Mauvernay workshop, master glassmaker in Saint-Galmier (Loire - France). Upon his death, his eldest son Benoit took over the workshop. After his death, his brother, Jean-Augustin Bessac, succeeded him. He moved to Grenoble in 1892 and built a vast workshop that counted up to 16 companions. Another brother, Pierre Bessac, had opened a workshop in Paris at that time.
Christophe Berthier, now at the head of the fully restored workshop, took over the Bessac workshops in 1998. It now has a stock of 1,500 shades of glass for its creations and renovations.
Works. The Atelier Berthier-Bessac has carried out numerous restorations such as that of all the glass roofs of the Notre-Dame de Fourvière basilica in Lyon, but also integrates stained glass windows, walls of lights in public buildings (schools, town halls...).
Employment. Two companions as well as external speakers.
