A protective rampart with solid towers and water-filled ditches to repel enemies.
Well before being a modern city, Grenoble was a very important Gallo-Roman city. Cularo, that was its name at the time, was surrounded by a protective shield filled with solid towers and ditches filled with water to repel enemies. From these walls built around the th century, there are still some visible remains on the wall of the Lesdiguières hotel, Hector-Berlioz Street and at the corner of Rue Lafayette, as well as Rue de la République. For the rest, the route of the ramparts is symbolized on the ground by bronze nails.

Quelques tronçons sont encore visibles mais très mal entretenus et restaurés à l'exception de ceux visibles dans la crypte archéologique du musée de l'Ancien Evêché de Grenoble (place Notre-Dame).
