We don't know when Laurent Mourguet, a young unemployed canut, invented Guignol, the puppet that is now world famous. Having become a tooth puller out of necessity, he used to settle in squares and attract customers using the emblematic puppets of the commedia dell'arte, until the day he decided to replace Polichinelle by an authentic canut named Guignol. He became a professional puppeteer in 1804, creating his own personnages : Guignol, a cheerful drôle with a Lyon accent, but also his friend Gnafron, carried on the bottle, and his companion Madelon. Guignol, who proclaimed social injustice, mocked the bourgeoisie, commented on local news, and made the beautiful evenings of the café-theater. Today, young and old alike are still delighted to meet this truculent character.
