Located between the 3rd and 7th arrondissements of Lyon, the 8th arrondissement covers in particular the Grange Blanche-Laennec-Transvaal district where the university hospital centre is located, the Bachut and Mermoz districts which act as Lyon's gateways, and the village-like Plaine-Montplaisir district due to its market held in a large square three times a week. But the 8th arrondissement is above all famous for being the birthplace of cinema since it is in this district that Louis and Auguste Lumière invented the 7th art. A museum called the Institut Lumière has been set in the former villa of the two brothers and is a must in the city of Lyon. The 8th arrondissement also includes among the cultural infrastructures the Maison de la danse, whose mission is to promote dance in all its forms; the Nouveau Théâtre du 8ème, a leading centre for contemporary theatre, and the Tony Garnier urban museum with its numerous painted walls.

When to go to Lyon?

Lyon, the third largest city in France, is alive all year round and has an incomparable architectural, cultural or religious wealth. No tourist season other than the one caused by school holidays. So you can come whenever you want! However, it is sometimes very hot in summer and very cold in winter. You should also know that magic works particularly during the Festival of Lights, an emblematic Lyon festival that makes the city shine from all sides, from small candles lit on the windowsills of private individuals to the sumptuous illuminations of the city. Pilgrimages are also an opportunity to climb the hill of Fourvière during religious festivities. The Nuits de Fourvière, in June and July, with multidisciplinary performances in ancient theatre, are also another incentive.
