OBSERVATOIRE DE LYON
The Observatory of Lyon is one of the historical figures of science in France. Most of its buildings and/or instruments are classified as Historical Monuments since 2008. It was founded in 1878 under the impetus of Charles André, originally astronomical astronomer at the Paris Observatory. Today, in addition to astronomical observations, some weather forecasts are made. The surrounding park has an area of 4 hectares, includes about twenty buildings and more than 40 different scientific instruments. Every month, on a Friday around the first moon quarter, a public evening is organized with the support of the Astronomical Society of Lyon. The unique opportunity to visit these places loaded with history and observe. At the beginning of the evening, a conference is usually proposed to present the latest important news about astronomy, before moving to comments proper… It's time to discover the telescopes under cupola, especially a 1 m telescope in particularly impressive diameter! The visitor touches the world of modern professional astronomy. So we wonder why such an observatory could be built so close to the city… and realize that there was a time when the light pollution of our cities did not bode well for the vision of stars!
