Surface coal mining in Sainte-Foy dates back to 1740.
Surface coal mining in Sainte-Foy dates back to 1740. The village grew when a member of the de Fenoyl family bought and developed the coal mines. At first, there were only open-cast galleries, then shafts up to 600 meters deep were dug. In 1812, Sainte-Foy-les-Houilles was known as Sainte-Foy-les-Houilles. Mining stopped in March 1931, then resumed from 1940 to 1945 to supply homes. No visible traces of this mining operation remain, apart from a few miners' houses.
