CANUT WORKSHOP
Vaulx-en-Velin is home to a canuts workshop offering guided tours. These tours highlight the history of Lyon's silk industry, which dates back to the 15th century. At the time, Lyon was a major European trading center, where silk fabrics from the East and Italy were sold at fairs. To prevent currency from fleeing abroad, Louis XI called on Italian weavers to train volunteer workers in Lyon. Over time, Lyon became a silk metropolis, with numerous small workshops scattered throughout the city. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Lyon's silk industry acquired international renown, thanks in particular to the development of the "tire" loom, which enabled the mastery of patterned fabrics. Today, the canuts' workshop in Vaulx-en-Velin offers visitors the opportunity to discover the fascinating history of Lyonnais silk.
