CONTEMPORARY ART INSTITUTE
An institute developing exhibition and meeting activities combined with the building up of a collection of works.
As a creation and research tool for contemporary art, the Institut d'art contemporain develops a program of exhibitions and encounters, combined with the building up of a collection of works of international renown. In a new space each time, the Institut produces four annual exhibition periods, themselves composed of simultaneous projects of an original nature. Today, the Institut d'art contemporain's collection is one of France's most important public collections. Comprising 1,600 works by artists of national and international renown, the collection is open to all forms of artistic expression (painting, photography, video, installation, sculpture...) and includes artists who have become "historic" (Alighiero Boetti, Daniel Buren, Jimmie Durham, Dan Graham, Rodney Graham, On Kawara, Gerhard Richter, Martha Rosler, Jeff Wall, Lawrence Weiner,...) as well as artists whose careers are in full bloom. Most of the Institut's research and awareness-raising activities are carried out outside its walls, using its own collection. This collection has an impact throughout the Rhône-Alpes region and beyond. For the Institut, this means experimenting with the many possibilities offered by its collection, in collaboration with numerous partner structures, thereby strengthening the contemporary art network in the Rhône-Alpes region, and forging privileged links with international institutions.
