Set against the majestic backdrop of the mountains, Savoie's vineyards flourish in small, scattered islands, occupying a variety of terrains: the well-exposed flanks of the Molasse hills, the slopes of the Jurassic ranges, the alluvial terraces and the lower slopes of the steep sub-alpine massifs such as the Bauges and Chartreuse. These vineyards produce wines distinguished by their delicate tannins and spicy, fruity aromas, all of which benefit from the Savoie Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Two grape varieties take pride of place: Gamay and Mondeuse.
