LEYRITZ HOUSE
Built on a hill a few kilometres from Basse-Pointe, the Habitation belonged to a rich family of Bordeaux settlers. The cultivation of sugar cane, spices, manioc and tobacco made it the richest estate in northern Martinique with more than 300 slaves. Nostalgic for Western architecture, the Leyritz family built the mansion with a Mansard-style roof surrounded by a French garden where two 18th century basins still remain. Transformed into a charming hotel in the 1970s, the structure went bankrupt in 2008. Very damaged by Hurricane Dean in 2007, the Habitation today is closed to visitors.
