The theatre was built between 1832 and 1834, on the initiative of the president of the Municipality of Campeche, General Francisco de Paula Toro. The design of the building, then known as the Colosseum, was drawn by the French architect Theodore Journot. It was not until 1879 that it was given the name of its instigator. Rebuilt between 1913 and 1915, it was inaugurated for the third time in 1990 on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the founding of the city.
