BALUARTE DE LA SOLEDAD - MUSEO ARQUITECTURA MAYA
Museum located in the fort of Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, known for its presentation of the four Mayan architectural styles
The "Museum of Mayan Architecture" is housed in the late 16th-century fort of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, which was to become one of the most imposing of the baluartes built during the later fortification of the city, as it protected the Puerta de Mar and the landing quay in the port of Campeche. This old museum, which was reopened in 2005, is renowned for its clear presentation of the state's four Mayan architectural styles, with invaluable maps and detailed sketches: Petén Norte (Calakmul), Río Bec (Xpujil, Becán, Río Bec, Chicanná, Hormiguero etc.), Chenes (Santa Rosa X, Hormiguero etc.), Río Bec (Xpujil, Becán, Río Bec, Chicanná, Hormiguero etc.), Río Bec (Xpujil, Becán, Río Bec, Hormiguero etc.).), Chenes (Santa Rosa Xtampak, Hochob, Trabasqueno, Dzibilnocac, etc.) and Puuc (located along the coastal fringe, towards Mérida, their remains are not the most impressive in the state). The aim is not to separate the styles as if they were mutually exclusive, which makes it easier to understand the different eras, influences and borrowings. To top it all off, the museum features original stelae, lintels and monoliths from other sites in the region, notably Calakmul and Edzná. It's a wonderful and essential stop-off before exploring the sites themselves. For a fine view of the city, simply climb the ramparts, which are accessible from a staircase in front of the museum entrance.
