FUERTE DE SAN MIGUEL - MUSEO ARQUEOLÓGICO
Fort built on a promontory, which housed the museum of arms and the navy before being devoted to archaeology
The fort of San Miguel, evocative of the military architecture of Campeche, was built on a promontory at the end of the 18th century, when the English, already present in Florida and Belize, seemed to be showing some interest in the peninsula... The attack never took place... but its building was nevertheless used by General Santa Ana when he attacked the city in 1824. The buildings had several lives with military or cultural vocations. Thus, before being dedicated to archaeology, the fort housed the Museum of Arms and the Navy until 1978. The ten rooms of the current beautiful museum have been progressively fitted out and enriched since 1986. They present the origins of the Mayan civilization in the region, the territorial division, the architectural styles and the management of water resources in pre-Hispanic times. Two rooms are definitely worth a visit for the historical value of the pieces on display. First, the one dedicated to the funerary figurines found on the small island of Jaina (north of the city and closed to the public) and then the one dedicated to the site of Calakmul: we find a beautiful reconstruction of the tomb of structure II dedicated to the "dívinos señores de Calakmul" and, above all, the enchanting funerary mask of jade. From the ramparts you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the sea. It is not for nothing that the promontory has been called "Bellavista" since colonial times.
