BALUARTE DE SAN PEDRO
This would have been the sixth bastion to be built to arm the city with its defense system against invaders
Founded in 1702, it would have been the sixth bastion to be built to arm the city's defense system against invaders. Access is via a gate opposite the San Juan de Dios temple, with a ramp leading to the top. Legend has it that it was once the seat of the Inquisition. At the entrance, you can see the Vatican coat of arms, the keys of St. Peter's surmounted by the papal tiara. What is certain is that it served as a refuge for the city's troops during the battles of 1824 against the central power in Mérida.
