CENTRO CULTURAL EL PALACIO
Interactive museum to house the old customs buildings in San Francisco de Campeche.
The visit to this beautiful interactive museum begins on the ground floor, which was originally intended to house the old customs buildings. Four thematic rooms illustrate the history and evolution of the city of San Francisco de Campeche. In the "Fortifications Room", you will learn all about the theme of defence and the strategies put in place to fight against the invasions suffered by the city over the centuries; detailed biographies of European privateers, pirates and freebooters are presented. In the "Trade Room", the history of the routes and goods, both local and those that have marked the transatlantic history of the city, is retraced. The palo de tinte (or palo campeche), a tree with a red trunk and thorny branches, called "ek" by the Mayans, is on display, from which natural vegetable dyes are extracted. Its flourishing trade during the 19th century allowed the elite to import luxury products from Europe such as French tiles, Belgian bricks, Italian marble and furniture of all kinds that would transform the appearance of the city and the interiors of its wealthy inhabitants. Finally, the "navigation room" is perhaps the highlight of the show: you enter the hold of a ship to learn all you want to know about the construction techniques of the various ships. It's breathtaking.
