"Hanal Pixan", the food of souls given to the dead on All Saints' Day, refers today to the festivities of the Feast of the Dead.
"Hanal Pixan" is the food traditionally offered to the dead during All Saints' Day on the Yucatán Peninsula. By extension, the word now designates the festivities of the Festival of the Dead. In Mérida, the Hanal Pixan is celebrated with great pomp and ceremony, with an exhibition of altars and a parade in disguise - the "Paseo de las Ánimas" - which starts at the Iglesia de la Ermita and ends at the general cemetery. It's a very popular event, the result of a syncretism between Mayan traditions (skull and crossbones, cempasúchil flowers, Indian music) and Halloween.
