PALACIO DE GOBIERNO
Palace in a more contemporary and dreamlike style by Castro Pacheco, where remarkable frescoes are hidden in Merida
Behind the pistachio facade of this palace, inaugurated in 1892, there are some remarkable frescoes. They were not executed in the heroic style of Diego Rivera but in a more contemporary and dreamlike style by Fernando Castro Pacheco, a local painter. Those in the Salón de Historia highlight the eternally renewed spirit of the Mayan people who survive despite the merciless repression exercised by the Spaniards. They are thus diametrically opposed to the sculptures in Casa Montejo representing a conquistador with his foot on the head of a Maya.
