GRAN MUSEO DEL MUNDO MAYA
Museum that aims to make better known and transmit the Mayan culture of yesterday and today in Merida
Inaugurated in September 2012, the museum's aim is to promote Mayan culture, past and present. Its architecture, in the image of the Mayan cosmogony, evokes the sky, the earth and the underworld, and immediately plunges us into the backstage of this civilization. A dynamic, interactive museography combines magnificent archaeological pieces (original or reconstructed, such as the façade of the Ek'Balam temple) with historical documents that also highlight contemporary Mayan culture and life in the 19thcentury , before the Mexican Revolution. The museum also does an excellent job of explaining certain aspects of Mayan culture that are usually left out of most museums: the workings of the calendar, numeration and cosmogony are presented via well-made short films and an installation of interactive screens. A visit that's both essential and exciting. On Saturdays and Sundays, general or thematic guided tours ("The history of a great civilization") lasting from 45 to 90 minutes are offered, in English (at 11am) or Spanish (at 12pm), providing a comprehensive overview of Mayan culture. Since 2024, the museum has been exhibiting the collections of the former Museo de Arte Popular de Yucatán de la casa Molina. A visit to the museum's well-designed website beforehand will provide you with all the latest information. On weekends at 8.30pm, avideo mapping is projected onto the museum's façade...
