MUSEO PALACIO CANTÓN
Museum of Anthropology characteristic of the Beaux-Arts style in vogue during the regime of Porfirio Diaz in Mérida
This regional museum of anthropology is located in a typical early twentieth-century villa, characteristic of the fine arts style in vogue under Porfirio Díaz's regime: General Cantón commissioned the Italian architect Enrico Deserti to design it and the sculptor Michele Giacomino to carry out the details. Acquired by the government in 1932, its permanent collection of Mayan artefacts will be added to the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya in 2012. Since then, it has organized magnificent temporary exhibitions related to Mexican archaeology and the Mayan world.
