CASA DE LAS TORTUGAS
One of the most soberly decorated temples, with three openings on each side.
This rectangular building is one of the most soberly decorated temples. It has three openings on each of its sides giving access to the interior of the building. The lower part of the building is overhung by a frieze consisting of juxtaposed vertical columns and a cornice in which tortoiseshaped cut stones are set at regular intervals. In Mayan mythology, the tortoise is associated with water, rain and earth, and it is therefore assumed that this temple was dedicated to an aquatic deity.
