LA CAPILLA DE INDIOS
Capilla de Indios or roofless chapel, the place where the employees of the haciendas who worked the henequen came to pray
Its name is symptomatic of the racial segregation that differentiated the Spanish and Mayan communities. In fact, the peninsula boasts a whole network of chapels of this type, which were intended solely for the Mayans and their evangelization. These chapels were not usually staffed by priests, but opened for periodic visits; they can be found in Tibolón, Popolá, Dzibilchaltún, Valladolid and Maní, among others. Also known as the "roofless chapel", it was here that the hacienda employees who worked thehenequén came to pray.
