MUSEO SUBACUATICO DE ARTE (MUSA)
The largest underwater museum in the world with more than 500 large anthropomorphic sculptures under the sea.
The largest underwater museum in the world! From 2009 to 2013, the English sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor, with the help of several Mexican visual artists (including Rodrigo Quiñones Reyes and Karen Salinas Martínez), installed more than 500 large anthropomorphic sculptures under the sea, between Cancún and Isla Mujeres. The works, spread over an area of 420 square meters, are constructed of alkaline cement that facilitates the colonization by marine species and the establishment of coral. These sculptures evolve over time. They have been immersed in different places, in "galleries" with various themes. The idea is that these sculptures promote the regeneration of the coral reef, threatened by mass tourism and hurricanes that affect the region. There are three different ways to explore the underwater world: the first one, on board a boat equipped with a glass bottom, allows you to have live explanations above the sculptures, but a good visibility is necessary and, without going in the water, you lose a lot of the experience. The second one is in snorkeling, in Punta Nizuc. The sculptures are at a depth of 4 meters, but you have to keep your life jacket on, which limits the exploration a bit. The third - and best - option is scuba diving. The immersion is in Manchones, where the depth is 8 meters. A poetic and fascinating experience. Keep your eyes open, you might even see some rays!
