ZONA ARQUEOLÓGICA DE SAN GERVASIO
The main archaeological site of the island, which was a place of pilgrimage dedicated to the goddess of fertility Ixchel in San Miguel.
San Gervasio is the main archaeological site of the island. It is far from having the splendor of Chichén Itzá, Cobá or Tulum for the visitor, but it has an undeniable historical importance since it was a place of pilgrimage dedicated to the goddess of the fertility Ixchel. Its origins date back to 300 AD, but the site developed especially from the eighth century onwards, when relations and exchanges with other cities in the north of Quintana Roo intensified. At the beginning of the second millennium, following in the footsteps of Chichén Itzá, the city became part of an even larger commercial network, becoming a major Mayan settlement within two centuries. It was during the Late Postclassic period (1200-1450 AD) that most of the present buildings were constructed, while this small capital administered all the island communities. Upon their arrival, the Spaniards reported a place of worship dedicated to the goddess Ixchel. Her sanctuary was located in the area of the present-day village of San Miguel. San Gervasio is not very interesting if you have already visited several major sites on the peninsula, but there are few tourists and its wilderness is pleasant. It is interesting to take a guide on the spot (very affordable). The area is made up of six architectural complexes joined by a network of sacbés, as well as other isolated temples, which give an idea of how the Maya conducted their administrative, religious and daily life activities.
